Serving The Society

Surjudaya has undertaken numerous social welfare initiatives in our society, primarily focusing on community development programs tailored to the needs of various tribal communities in Assam. Additionally, Surjudaya has collaborated with government and semi-government agencies to implement a range of projects, furthering its mission to drive positive social change. We are currently running two Child Care Institutions(CCI) for boys and girls in Makum and Gangabari respectively. Our organization operates an Open Shelter Home, providing care and protection to children in need. This facility, along with our other institutions and programs focused on child protection, is overseen by the District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) and the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), which operates under the auspices of the Children's Court. These initiatives have received authorization from both the Central and State Governments. SURJUDAYA also conducted an Adoption Centre “SAA” at Majuli District of Assam.

Notably, our organization is the sole entity within the district to manage two Sub-Centres for CHILDLINE, two separate children's homes catering to boys and girls respectively, and an Open Shelter Home. We take pride in our robust network, which encompasses collaborative efforts with district administration officials and stakeholders across the district.

As we were aware that our district is densely covered with Tea Garden Areas and these gardens plays a crucial role in the maintenance of the district’s economy. OurOrganization is basically related to Tea Gardens of the District. And we are happy to inform you that a lot of ASHA personnel are working with us in various projects and we have a huge number of Volunteers from all the Tea Gardens of Tinsukia. Tea Gardens were initially found as the hot spot for child abuses due to lack of responsibilities of parents towards their children and 70% of cases were traced out of tea areas. Therefore, we discussed the matter with different Stakeholders working for Tea Garden people like ABITA and with their collaboration, we started conducting awareness programs in the Line areas of tea gardens and we’re supported by the Managers, Welfare Officers and the line Chowkidars of the gardens. We conducted Street Plays on various topics like Child Labor, Child Marriage, Human Trafficking, Witch Hunting and consumption of Narcotics. The plays where been conducted in a number of tea gardens. A successful innovative step was taken by us regarding Education. There was a Project named DIKSHA under Oil India Ltd. We were given the responsibility of Awareness all over Tinsukia including all the Tea Gardens and select candidates with Degree qualification for a special residential training course of 3 months. We did it for the Company and selected some 30 candidates from all over the district covering Tea Gardens and those candidates were taken to Guwahati free of cost and provided training for 3 months. Now, more than 25 candidates got placement out of Assam in different Ships and Star Hotels with attractive salaries above 15,000. This was a great achievement for us for which the Tea Gardens always pays gratitude to us. We are still engaged with ABITA regarding various works for Garden areas.

In terms of Trafficking, we can say that Surjudaya as an organization has able to achieve a lot of successful attempts regarding child protection in Tea Garden areas. We were able to rescue 3 girls below 18 years who were trafficked from Phillobari Tea Estate to Arunachal Pradesh. We CHILDLINE with the help of Police successfully rescued the three girls and restored them to their parents and the trafficker, who was from their garden was handed over to Police. One more successful attempt was conducted in Moilungpung of Pengree and the girl from a poor family was trafficked by a lady of the village to Arunachal Pradesh. We were reported about the case and after intervention along with Police now the child was brought back to her home and the lady is absconding till date. We have taken up several cases specially from Tea Gardens of sexual abuse where the child gets pregnant, and we took proper care till their baby’s birth which is completely under the supervision of District Child Protection Unit, Tinsukia.

Hence, we have a broad and deep network in the grass root level of the District. A lot of missing children were restored to their parents with proper Home Trace and Legal Procedures through the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB).

As mentioned above, Our CCIs are for all children who are rescued from different obstructive situations by CHILD HELPLINE and Police. Here we provide them with all the basicneeds like food, shelter, clothing, education, health along with Sponsorship facilities were applicable with the permission of Court. In CCI, children were provided withproper counselling sessions.

While doing awareness activities throughout the remote and developed areas of the district, we carried out a lot of programs with different government and non- government Stakeholders including SDOs, BDOs, Superintendent of Police, Coal India Personnel, along with a large number of Teachers, Youth Organizations and Journalists.

Hence, our Web is quite strong throughout the District. Here we have to mention that we are connected through Projects not only in our District Tinsukia but we have sources and services spread to districts like Dibrugarh, Jorhat and Golaghat as well. Moreover, Community meeting, Adolescent Girls and Boys Awareness Program, Film Screening, Street Play Performed, Survey etc. conducted various Tea Garden of Upper Assam under Directorate of Tea and Ex Tea Tribes Welfare Department of Assam.
